Archdiocese of Milwaukee

This site was created to provide unsecured creditors, including sex abuse survivors, with information about the chapter 11 bankruptcy case of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee (the “Archdiocese”).

On January 4, 2011, the Archdiocese commenced chapter 11 case number 11-20059 in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin ("Bankruptcy Court"). The Honorable Susan V. Kelley is the presiding judge.

Committee and Plan Trustee

On January 24, 2011, the United States Trustee appointed the committee of creditors holding unsecured claims in the Archdiocese’s bankruptcy case ("Committee"). The Committee selected Pachulski Stang Ziehl & Jones LLP ("PSZJ") as its counsel. The bankruptcy court approved that employment on February 23, 2011. James StangKenneth Brown, and Gillian Brown have been the principal attorneys at PSZJ responsible for this engagement.

On November 30, 2015, the bankruptcy court confirmed the Archdiocese’s plan of reorganization. Among other things, the Committee was dissolved and a number of entities were obligated to fund the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Abuse Survivor Trust (the “Trust”) that will be used to make financial awards to certain sex abuse survivors. PSZJ now represents Eric Schwarz, the Plan Trustee who has been engaged to pay those awards from the Trust.

Current Status of Case

Sex abuse survivors who are entitled to a payment from the Archdiocese bankruptcy case will receive a letter from the Plan Trustee by late January 2016 regarding that award. Before the Plan Trustee can pay an award to a sex abuse survivor, that survivor must provide the Plan Trustee with a signed General Release of Claims and signed Medicare Certification.
